Matthew’s gospel contains a detailed record of Jesus’ genealogy and he begins his account of Jesus’ life with a long list of names. This record is easily passed over, but to do so misses the surprising light it casts on this divine drama and the amazing insights it reveals about the One who was to come. Matthew’s list signals that the birth of Jesus is the culmination of God’s salvation plan set in motion long ago and marks the beginning of a new kingdom reality Israel and the world.
